April 20, 2010,

Dear Valued Camp Participants and Parents,

Today I reached the difficult decision to not hold the Multimedia in Focus 2010 media camp.

We've hosted the media camp for the past 10 years, and we plan to hold the media camp in 2011 in addition to weekend "mini-camps." It has been my joy to lead this unique program each of the past summer. We've helped many young people have productive experiences with New Media. Each year we serve about 25-30 young men and women ages 11-17. Multimedia in Focus is a small program by design. Providing access to professional equipment, quality software, and media workstations, along with having college trained instructors requires smaller numbers of participants to offer a high quality program.

In fact, I think the media camp is one of my most important endeavors in life. It is a labor a love for which I have received no compensation and have gladly given a part of my summers. I am passionate about helping young people gain life-skills and become producers of positive messages, rather than only consumers of media content.

In January, I felt that I might not hold the camp this year to allow me to take a needed Sabbatical for most of the summer. However, I dismissed that notion when I thought about what youth might miss if I did not hold the camp. In reality, we would be able to hold the camp if I were able to retain most of last year's staff. However, this is the first year in which we would likely not have any experienced staff members available for this year's media camp.

I've communicated with Lilly Endowment, whose generosity has made our program viable for the past 10 years. I hope we can attract their support for 2011.

It would have been better to make this decision before now, but I must act now in the interest of what is best for our program and what is best for my well-being. Your understanding and prayers are appreciated!
